GIFT Nifty, an early indicator of the Nifty 50’s performance, traded at 24,554.54 on Wednesday, pointing to a positive start for Indian equities after benchmark indices returned to gains in the previous session.

Oil prices fell for a third consecutive session after Iran and Oman discussed an “interim framework” aimed at facilitating the return of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude dropped below $87 a barrel, taking its losses for the week to about 8%, while West Texas Intermediate traded near $81 a barrel.

Nifty Overview & Outlook

The benchmark Nifty index ended higher at 24335 spot levels after adding 115 points to its previous closing values.

The performance on the broader front was mix as Mid cap index gained 0.54% while Small cap index ended on a flat to negative note.

The majority of the sectoral index tracked at NSE ended in green. Among them, Nifty Healthcare index gained over 1% closely followed by Consumer Durables, Pharma and PSU Bank index that rose 0.75% to 0.93%.

Technically, the Nifty index breached its past six-days-long congestion range of 300-points (24026–24313 spot zone) on the higher side in last second tick. Going ahead, a sustained trading above 24320 spot on Wednesday could lead the index towards the 24450–24480 spot zone; conversely, a fall below 24250 spot could further strengthen-up the chances of further consolidation in the near term.

 

Derivatives Overview & Outlook

Yesterday, Nifty, Banknifty Finnifty and Midcapnifty futures moved north on short covering, shed around 14%, 11%, 52% and 10.5% of open interest respectively.

Nifty and Banknifty futures rolled 77% and 79% of open interest respectively into next contracts which is higher than previous month rollovers of 72% and 76% respectively.

On options front, Nifty will start the first weekly series of September contracts with maximum positions at 24500 CE and 24200 PE.

 

Institutional Trading Activity

Yesterday, FIIs bought stocks worth Rs 1594 Cr in the cash segment, sold index futures worth Rs 1550 Cr and bought stocks futures worth Rs 3483 Cr. DIIs too were net buyers in the cash segment to the tune of Rs 230 Cr.
