Oil prices hit two-week lows on Monday on optimism that the ​US and Iran were moving closer towards ​a peace deal even though they remained at odds ‌over key issues, including blockades on the Strait of Hormuz that continued to restrict oil supply from the West Asia.

  • Asian equity markets are trading with a positive bias as easing oil prices pointed to possible progress on reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Oil prices dropped sharply after the US hinted progress toward a potential agreement with Iran that could eventually reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Global benchmark Brent crude dropped up to 5.4% to $97.97 a barrel.

  • LIC (Q4, YoY)- net premium income up 12.2% to Rs 1.65 lakh crore versus Rs 1.47 lakh crore.Net profit up 23.2% to Rs 23,420 crore versus Rs 19,013 crore.Value of new business up 41.6% to Rs 14,179 crore.AUM up 5.1% to Rs 57.3 lakh crore.Solvency ratio improved to 2.35% versus 2.11% YoY. Nifty Overview & Outlook

The benchmark Nifty index ended slightly higher at 23719 spot levels after adding 65 points to its previous closing values.

Performance on the broader front was mixed and muted as Mid cap index ended on a flat to positive note whereas small cap index settled on a flat to negative note.

Performance was no different on the sectoral front. Among them, Private Bank index was at the top of the tally, gained 1.49% followed by Financial Services index that gained 1.13%. On the other hand, Media. Pharma and Healthcare index that fell in range 1.25% to 1.52%.

Gift Nifty is indicating a gap-up opening for the domestic markets amid progress in Iran-US peace talks. Technically, Nifty index is still trading in a tight consolidation range 23300-23850 spot levels. The index-heavy banking and finance pack are trading on verge of breakout on the higher side. Moving ahead, a sustainable trading above 23850 will open the floor for 24000-24200 spot levels in the immediate near term.

 

Derivatives Overview & Outlook

On Friday, Banknifty, Finnifty and Midcpnifty futures added around 3%, 7% and 6% of open interest respectively as long positions, whereas no significant changes were observed in Nifty futures on open interest as well as on price front.

Majority of the sectoral indices settled on a positive note. Amongst them, Cement, Realty and Textile stocks witnessed maximum addition of long positions along with some short covering among Chemicals and FMCG stocks, whereas some short buildup was seen among New-age and Pharma stocks.

On option front, put addition along with some call unwinding was seen at multiple OTM strikes. Maximum positions are at 24000 CE followed by 25000 CE and 23000 PE followed by 22500 PE.

 

Institutional Trading Activity

Last week, FIIs sold stocks worth Rs 9985 Cr in the cash segment, bought stock futures worth Rs 1229 Cr and sold index futures worth Rs 1322 Cr. DIIs were net buyers in the cash segment to the tune of Rs 16948 Cr.
