The Budget Session of Parliament will commence today with President Droupadi Murmu addressing the joint sitting of the two Houses. The Economic Survey of India is scheduled to be presented on January 29, followed by the Union Budget 2026–27 on February 1.

News highlights from across the globe

  • US equities inched higher on Tuesday, driven by gains in major technology names. The S&P 500 finishing at a fresh record close.
  • Asian currencies strengthened as the US dollar fell to its weakest level in four years, with investors growing increasingly cautious toward the world’s reserve currency amid unpredictable policy signals from Washington.
  • Oil prices hovered close to a 16‑week peak after a sharp drop in the US dollar, with traders also keeping a close watch on renewed threats toward Iran from President Donald Trump. West Texas Intermediate traded near $63 a barrel.

  • Vodafone Idea Q3 FY26 (Cons, QoQ) revenue up 1.1% at Rs 11,323 crore versus Rs 11,195 crore. Ebitda up 2.8% at Rs 4,817 crore versus Rs 4,685 crore. Margin at 42.5% versus 41.8%. Net Loss at Rs 5,286 crore versus loss of Rs 5,524 crore. ARPU at Rs 186.
  • Adani Green clarifies that it is on track to deploy the country’s largest single‑location battery energy storage system, expected to be commissioned in the coming months.
  • Axis Bank approves the reappointment of Subrat Mohanty as Whole‑Time Director & appoints Sudipto Nag as Chief Credit Officer.
  • Vedanta approves the sale of a 1.59% stake in Hindustan Zinc through an offer for sale (OFS).

Nifty Overview & Outlook

Benchmark Nifty index ended higher at 25175 spot levels after adding 127 points to its previous closing values.

Broader markets traded inline with the benchmark as Mid and Small cap indices gained 0.59% & 0.41% respectively.

Performance on the sectoral front was mix. Amongst them, Nifty Metal was the top performer, gained over 3% followed by PSU Bank, Nifty Bank index that rose 1.76% & 1.25% respectively. On the flip side, Media index was the worst performer, fell 1.44% followed by Auto index that was down 0.93%.

The Nifty index has begun stabilizing around the upward-sloping Trendline support placed around 24900 spot levels. The 25350-25450 spot zone will act as immediate hurdle on the higher side. Going ahead, it is likely to spend a little more time in 24900-25450 zone. Sustained trading above 25450 spot levels will open the floor for further upmove towards 25900 spot levels in near term.

 

Derivatives Overview & Outlook

Yesterday, all sectoral indices rose on short covering as Nifty, Banknifty, Finnifty and Midcapnifty futures shed around 21%, 28.5% 12% and 12.5% of open interest respectively on scheduled monthly expiry.

Nifty and Banknifty futures rolled 71% of open interest each into next contracts which is slightly lower than previous month rollovers of 72% & 77% respectively.

On option front, Nifty will start the first weekly contracts of the February series with a maximum position at 26000 CE and 25000 PE.

 

Institutional Trading Activity

Yesterday, FIIs sold stocks worth Rs 3068 Cr in the cash segment, sold index futures worth Rs 2998 Cr and bought stocks futures worth Rs 6559 Cr. DIIs were net buyers in the cash segment to the tune of Rs 9000 Cr.
