Indian benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty are likely to open on a muted note on Thursday, with GIFT Nifty signalling a largely flat start despite a sharp sell-off across global markets. Hotter-than-expected US inflation has strengthened expectations of further Federal Reserve interest-rate hikes, triggering heavy selling in technology stocks across Wall Street and Asia. Elevated crude oil prices and persistent foreign institutional selling could add to pressure on Indian equities.

Overview and Outlook

Global Stock Market Today

  • US equity markets settled lower in range 0.094% to 1.88%.
  • European equity markets ended on a flat to positive note.
  • The majority of Asian equity markets are trading in red.
  • GIFT Nifty is little changed, Nifty futures is likely to open around 22640 levels.

News highlights from across the globe

  • US stock market ended lower on Wednesday, October 14; US consumer prices rose the most since April, raising bond yields and worries that the Federal Reserve will need to raise interest rates to deal with inflation.
  • Asian Equity markets started the day on the back foot as trading kicked off in Asia on Thursday, as a quicker-than-expected increase in US consumer price inflation upped expectations for the Federal Reserve to act later this year and pushed stocks lower.
  • Crude oil prices cooled off with Brent Crude slipping to $104.9 per barrel levels on Thursday even as a cargo ship sank in the Strait of Hormuz after being stuck by an “unknown projectile”, and Iran-backed Houthis continued to attack energy units in Saudi Arabia.
