Nifty Overview & Outlook

The benchmark Nifty index ended lower at 25425 spot levels after a cut of 288 points from its previous closing values.

Broader markets outperformed the benchmark as Mid and Small cap indices were down just 0.32% & 0.55% against over 1% declines in the frontline index.

Performance on the sectoral front was mix. Amongst them, Nifty IT was the worst performer, down 4.75% followed by Realty, Media and Chemical index that were down 2.54%, 1.31% & 1.07% respectively. On the other hand, Metal was the top gainer, rose 0.93% followed by Oil & Gas index that rose 0.5%.

Nifty index is consolidating in a slightly downward sloping channel formation with supports at 25300-25200 spot levels and immediate resistance at 25640 spot levels (channel formation breakout levels is placed at 25750 spot levels). At current juncture, we suggest traders to maintain sell on rise trading approach as long as it is trading below 25750 spot levels on closing basis and any bounce up to 25640 spot levels should be taken as fresh shorting opportunity.

 

Derivatives Overview & Outlook

All index futures (Nifty, Banknifty, Finnfity and Midcpnifty) drifted lower amid long unwinding on scheduled monthly expiry.

Nifty futures rolled 68% of open interest into next contract which was lower than the past 3 months average rollovers of 70.6%. Banknifty futures rolled 74% of open interest into next contracts which was marginally higher than the past 3 months average rollovers of 73%.

On options front, Nifty will start the first weekly series of March contract with maximum positions at 25000 PE and 25500 CE.

 

Institutional Trading Activity

Yesterday, FIIs sold stocks worth Rs 103 Cr in the cash segment, sold index futures worth Rs 3293 Cr and bought stocks futures worth Rs 357 Cr. On the other hand, DIIs were net buyers in the cash segment to the tune of Rs 3161 Cr.
