News highlights from across the globe

  • US stocks ended higher on Friday, building on a rally that saw four major indices notch records for the first time since 2021 after the Federal Reserve cut interest rates.
  • Oil prices were little changed after notching a modest drop last week, as traders gauge the impact of European Union moves on Russian supply and strikes by Ukraine on the OPEC+ member’s energy infrastructure. Brent traded at $67 a barrel.
  • The government will release eight core industries output data for August at 5 p.m.

Nifty Overview & Outlook

Benchmark Nifty index settled lower at 25327 spot levels after a cut of 97 points from its previous closing values amid profit taking ahead of weekend.

Broader markets outperformed the benchmark as Mid and Small cap indices settled on a positive note.

Performance on the sectoral from was mix. Amongst them, PSU Bank index was at the top of the tally, gained 1.28% followed by Pharma & Realty index that rose over 0.5% each. On the other hand, Consumer Durables, Private Bank and Media index were at the bottom of the tally, down just over 0.5% each.

GST 2.0 rollout might trigger a fresh momentum in select category. Technically, Nifty index is well placed on multiple chart frames till it is trading above 25050 spot levels on closing basis and any intraday dip up to 25200 spot levels should be taken as a fresh buying opportunity.

 

Derivatives Overview & Outlook

Last Friday, Finnifty futures added 2.3% of open interest as short buildup whereas no significant changes were seen among Nifty, Banknifty and Midcapnifty futures on open interest as well as on price front

Performance on the sectoral front was mix. Amongst them, Infrastructure, Pharma and Power stocks witnessed maximum addition of long positions whereas some short buildup was seen among Auto, Cement and Textile stocks.

On options front, call writing along with some put unwinding was seen at multiple strikes. Maximum positions are at 25300 PE and 26000 CE followed by 25400 CE.

 

Institutional Trading Activity

Last week, FIIs bought stocks worth Rs 2206 Cr in the cash segment, bought index futures worth Rs 4879 Cr and sold stocks futures worth Rs 1703 Cr. DIIs were too net buyers in the cash segment to the tune of Rs 11178 Cr during last week.
