India’s retail inflation moderated to a five-month low in January, led by lower vegetable prices. The CPI based inflation moderated to 4.31% in January from 5.22% in December. This was below consensus estimates, which had pegged it at 4.4%. Food and beverage inflation eased to 5.68% in January from 7.7% in December.

This was led by vegetable prices further cooling to 11.35% compared to 25.6% in the same duration. India’s core inflation, which excludes volatile food and fuel components, rose by 3.74% in January, as per Bloomberg, compared to 3.64% in December.

  • Muthoot Finance Q3 (Standalone, YoY) – NII up 42.8% to Rs 2,722 crore versus Rs 1,906 crore. Profit after tax up 32.7% to Rs 1,363 crore versus Rs 1,027 crore.
  • Godrej Industries Q3 Highlights (Consolidated, YoY) – Revenue up 34.4% to Rs 4,824.83 crore versus Rs 3,590.08 crore. Ebitda up 113.5% to Rs 596.84 crore versus Rs 279.31 crore. Margin at 12.4% versus 7.8%. Net profit up 77% to Rs 188.20 crore versus Rs 106.41 crore.
  • IIFL Finance Q3 Highlights (Consolidated, QoQ) – Total income down 4.4% to Rs 2,442.58 crore versus Rs 2,556.04 crore. Net profit down 92% to Rs 40.70 crore versus Rs 490.44 crore.
  • Kotak Mahindra Bank: The Reserve Bank of India has communicated its decision to lift restrictions placed on the bank.
  • Bharat Forge will partner with Liebherr to set up a manufacturing unit to address global aerospace industry demand.
  • NTPC Green Energy: ONGC and NTPC Green JV acquired Ayana Renewable Power for an enterprise value of Rs 19,500 crore.
  • Reliance Industries has incorporated its arm in Singapore to set up a global capability centre to consolidate R&D operations. It will make an investment of $100,000 towards the initial subscription of shares.
  • Tata Power’s arm will partner with ONGC to explore joint opportunities in battery energy storage.
  • ICICI Bank will retain its majority stake in ICICI Prudential AMC. The JV partner Prudential PLC plans to list its AMC unit.
  • Rites has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing to partner on IT solutions for consultancy works.

 

Nifty Overview & Outlook

Benchmark Nifty index ended on a flat to negative note, settled at 23045 levels after cut of 27 points from its previous closing values after a highly volatile trading sessions where at one point it was trading down over 250 points.

Broader markets performed in line with the benchmark as Mid and Small cap indices settled on a flat to negative note.

Performance on the sectoral front was mix. Amongst them, Realty was at worst performer, fell 2.75%. On the other hand, PSU Bank, Fin Services and Metal index led the advances, gained over 0.5% each.

Nifty index found supports around 22800-22750 price support zone. Going ahead, it is likely to trade sideways till it is trading in 22750-23450 range.

 

Derivatives Overview & Outlook

Yesterday, short covering was seen in Finnifty futures with decrease in open interest by around 2%, Midcapnifty futures shed around 1.5% of open interest as long unwinding. On the other hand, no significant change was seen in Nifty & Banknifty futures on price front as well as on open interest front.

Performance on the sectoral front was mix. Amongst them, Power, Realty and Technology stocks witnessed addition of short positions, whereas some long buildup was seen in Finance stocks along with some short covering among Cement, Textile and FMCG sto

On options front, call writing along with some put writing was seen at multiple strikes and maximum positions are at 24000 CE followed by 23500 CE and 22500 PE followed by 22700 PE.

 

Institutional Trading Activity

Yesterday, FIIs sold stocks worth Rs 4969 Cr in the cash segment, bought stocks futures worth Rs 2710 Cr and sold index futures worth Rs 426 Cr. DIIs were net buyers in the cash segment to the tune of Rs 5929 Cr
