- Top U.S. and Chinese economic officials met in Stockholm on Monday for more than five hours of talks aimed at resolving longstanding economic disputes at the centre of a trade war between the world’s top two economies, seeking to extend a truce by three months.
- Investors are awaiting a set of U.S. macroeconomic data this week, including inflation figures and the employment report, alongside the Federal Reserve’s two-day policy meeting beginning later in the day, with expectations largely pointing to rates being held steady.
BASE METALS
- In base metal counter, Copper prices can trade on firm path as it can move in range of 895-902. Copper prices slipped on both London and Shanghai exchanges on Tuesday, as traders weighed ongoing U.S.-China negotiations and the talks between the world’s top copper producer Chile and the U.S. over the latter’s 50% copper tariffs on August 1.
- Aluminum prices can trade on upside path as it may move in range of 252-256.while lead may also move in range of 177-183.
- The softening in copper prices reflects similar declines in other Chinese futures and is likely to be short-lived, as traders are cautious and closely watching U.S.-China trade talks and developments in U.S. copper import tariffs.
- Elsewhere, Chile, the world’s top copper producer and largest provider of refined copper to the U.S., expects U.S. copper tariffs to be discussed within broader U.S. trade talks in Washington this week.
ENERGY
- Crude oil may trade on mixed path as it can move in range of 5730-5830. Oil extended gains on Tuesday, lifted by hopes of improved economic activity after the U.S.-EU trade deal, a potential U.S.-China tariff truce and President Donald Trump’s shorter deadline for Russia to end the Ukraine war.
- The trade agreement between the United States and the European Union, while imposing a 15% import tariff on most EU goods, sidestepped a full-blown trade war between the two major allies that would have rippled across nearly a third of global trade and dimmed the outlook for fuel demand.
- Natural gas may trade on sideways path as it can move in range of 266-277.
- Meanwhile, Trump set a new deadline on Monday of “10 or 12 days” for Russia to make progress toward ending the war in Ukraine or face sanctions. Trump has threatened sanctions on both Russia and buyers of its exports unless progress is made.
