Indices extend rally; private sector banks in demand
17-May-2019 (14:22)

The Sensex and the Nifty further extended gains in mid-afternoon trade, led by strength in private sector banks. At 14:20 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, was up 409.30 points or 1.09% at 37,802.78. The Nifty 50 index was up 110.60 points or 0.98% at 11,367.70.

The market opened higher and held firm at higher levels in morning trade. Shares hovered in a range in mid-morning trade. Indices marched ahead in afternoon trade and hit fresh intraday high in mid-afternoon trade.

Among secondary barometers, the BSE Mid-Cap index was up 0.67%. The BSE Small-Cap index was up 0.41%. Both these indices underperformed the Sensex.

The market breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, was positive. On BSE, 1193 shares rose and 1081 shares fell. A total of 142 shares were unchanged.

Indian Hotels Company was up 1.37%. The company announced today that it signed a strategic partnership with Singapore's sovereign wealth fund, GIC, for an investment framework to the tune of about Rs 4000 crore or $600 million over a period of three years from the date of signing. This capital platform will be used to acquire fully operational hotels mainly in the luxury, upper upscale and upscale segments in India.

Private sector banks were in the limelight. RBL Bank (up 2.42%), Kotak Mahindra Bank (up 2.04%), ICICI Bank (up 1.85%), IndusInd Bank (up 1.49%), City Union Bank (up 1.40%), Axis Bank (up 1.33%), HDFC Bank (up 1.33%), Federal Bank (up 0.77%) and Yes Bank (up 0.62%), edged higher.

Public sector banks were mixed. Syndicate Bank (down 2.3%), Andhra Bank (down 1.67%), Bank of India (down 1.16%), Bank of Maharashtra (down 1.04%), Allahabad Bank (down 0.95%), United Bank of India (down 0.76%), Union Bank of India (down 0.71%), UCO Bank (down 0.6%) and Punjab & Sind Bank (down 0.19%), edged lower. Canara Bank (up 0.23%), State Bank of India (up 0.25%), IDBI Bank (up 0.29%), Bank of Baroda (up 0.59%), Corporation Bank (up 0.98%) and Indian Bank (up 1.34%), edged higher.

Overseas, shares in Europe traded lower while Asian shares reversed early gains on Friday amid signs of an escalation in Sino-US trade tensions. Market sentiment has been hurt by US government's move to block China's Huawei Technologies from buying vital American technology, drawing a sharp rebuke from Beijing.

US stocks rose on Thursday after strong earnings from Walmart and Cisco Systems and positive economic data helped quell some of the fears surrounding the ongoing US-China trade war.

On the data front, the Commerce Department said housing starts rose by 5.7% in April to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.235 million. Weekly jobless claims, meanwhile, fell to 212,000 last week. Further, the Philadelphia Fed manufacturing index in May rose to a four-month high of 16.6 after registering 8.5 in April. Any reading above zero indicates improving conditions.
