Key indices opened the session higher on bargain hunting after registering losses in the preceding two trading sessions. Later, the indices witnessed volatility even as they almost confined to positive territory so far. Gains in European and Asian bourses also helped key indices to trade with gains.

Among secondary indices, the S&P BSE Mid-Cap index fell 0.61%. The S&P BSE Small-Cap index lost 0.64%. Both these indices underperformed the Sensex.

The breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, was weak. On the BSE, 1,621 shares declined and 829 shares rose. A total of 120 shares were unchanged.

The company through Adjaristsqali Georgia LLC (AGL), its joint venture with Norway's Clean Energy Invest AS Norway (Clean Energy) and IFC InfraVentures (IFC), a member of the World Bank group announced the synchronization of its 186 megawatts (MW) Shuakhevi Hydro Power Project (HPP) in record time. Further, Tata Power has commenced stabilization procedures to ensure smooth operations. The construction of the plant started in the fall of 2013 and has been synchronized on the 1st and 2nd of August 2017, in a record time of less than four years.

Shuakhevi HPP is the largest hydropower plant to be built in Georgia over the past 50 years, and its project investment cost exceeded $420 million. The announcement was made during trading hours today, 22 August 2017.

Overseas, European and Asian shares edged higher as investors turned their attention to the US Federal Reserve's annual symposium in Jackson Hole at the end of the week. US stocks closed slightly higher yesterday, 21 August 2017, but a decline in tech and financials kept a lid on gains.

The annual Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium is scheduled for this Friday in Wyoming. Representatives from the central banks of more than 40 countries will attend the annual gathering, hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City.
