Market extends losses

Key benchmark indices extended losses and hit fresh intraday low as trading of muhurat session progressed as weakness in global stocks weighed on investors' sentiment. At 19:11 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex lost 178.19 points or 0.55% at 32,406.16. The Nifty 50 index fell 49.40 points or 0.48% at 10,161.45.

The S&P BSE Mid-Cap index dropped 0.06%. The fall in this index was lower than the Sensex's drop in percentage terms. The S&P BSE Small-Cap index advanced 0.28%, outperforming the Sensex.

The breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, was strong. On the BSE, 1,549 shares rose and 807 shares declined. A total of 92 shares were unchanged.

NTPC (down 1.8%), Tata Motors (down 1.16%), Coal India (down 1.15%), ONGC (down 1.03%), and Wipro (down 1.02%) declined.

Bank stocks dropped. ICICI Bank (down 1.35%), Kotak Mahindra Bank (down 0.98%), HDFC Bank (down 0.65%), Axis Bank (down 0.19%) and Yes Bank (down 0.1%) dropped. State Bank of India rose 0.12%.

Telecom stocks gained on renewed buying. Idea Cellular (up 1.92%), Bharti Airtel (up 1.32%), and MTNL (up 0.01%) gained.

Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) gained 4.93% after the board of directors of the company at its meeting held on 18 October 2017 has approved raising of additional funds upto an aggregate amount of Rs 20000 crore by issue of one or more types of the securities/instruments/modes including redeemable preference shares to the promoters on preferential basis; and/or, non-convertible debentures in one or more tranches; and/or inter corporate deposit/loans and/or commercial papers from the promoters and/or others. The announcement was made after market hours yesterday, 18 October 2017.

Reliance Communications declined 1.19%.

Mahindra Lifespace Developers jumped 4.93% after the company announced a joint venture with HDFC Capital to develop affordable housing projects in India. The announcement was made after market hours yesterday, 18 October 2017. Mahindra Lifespaces Developers (MLDL) said it has partnered with HDFC Capital Affordable Real Estate Fund- 1 (HDFC Capital) -- a fund managed by HDFC Capital Advisors, a wholly-owned subsidiary of HDFC, to form a platform focused on the development of affordable housing projects in India.

The platform will look to rapidly scale up in order to address the demand-supply gap in affordable housing in India, with an estimated development footprint of between 5 to 10 million square feet, depending on the locations selected for its projects, under the Happinest name.

The proposed developments will be undertaken through 'Mahindra Happinest Developers (MHDL), with a 51:49 equity share between MLDL and HDFC Capital. The first development to be undertaken by the joint platform will be 'Happinest, Palghar', expected to be launched in the second half of FY 2018.

Meanwhile, the stock markets remain open for muhurat trading today, 19 October 2017. The muhurat trading session on account of Diwali Laxmi Pujan is scheduled between 18:30 IST and 19:30 IST today, 19 October 2017. The normal session of equity markets remained closed today, 19 October 2017, on account of Diwali and will remain closed again tomorrow, 20 October 2017, on account of Diwali Balipratipada.

Muhurat session is held every year more from an auspicious standpoint as for a lot of the business communities the new financial year begins on Diwali. Investors make token purchases on this day to bring them good fortune in future.

Overseas, US benchmark stock indexes fell at the open today, 19 October 2017, as stocks retreated from all-time highs amid a fall in technology stocks led by Apple, after the Dow Jones Industrial Average surged past the 23,000 level in the previous session for the first time.

European stocks dropped as it appeared increasingly likely that the Spanish government would begin the process of imposing direct rule in the region of Catalonia more than two weeks after the regional leader there held a disputed independence referendum. Spain is in the midst of its biggest constitutional crisis in almost four decades after the leader of one of its wealthiest regions, Catalonia's Carles Puigdemont, held a referendum on secession on October 1 despite the country's highest court, the Spanish Constitutional Court, declaring the vote invalid.

Most Asian stocks declined after data showed growth in China, the world's second largest economy slowed slightly in the third quarter. Data showed China's economic growth cooled slightly to 6.8% in the third quarter from a year earlier, from the second quarter's 6.9%, as widely predicted.
